Today I stopped by the Smart Living Fair at Gerding Edlen‘s new LEED Silver apartments, The 20 on Hawthorne. I was lured to the event by the promise of seeing Portland’s first puzzle-lift parking apparatus and a chance to test ride a Segway. The free Deschutes beer and food platters didn’t stop me either.
Turns out the stacked parking wasn’t as exciting as I’d hoped, but the Segway was really fun (nnnneeerrd – I can hear co-pilot say). I remember when the Segway’s inventor was making bold promises about how it was going to change the world. Well, maybe not so much. But it has given pop culture another thing to pick on and perhaps delight its few private owners who enjoy its smooth and distinctive ride.
But what about the apartments? They feature all the green bells and whistles we’re becoming more accustomed to these days. Dual flush toilets, Energy Star appliances including this cool fridge by Blomberg, low-VOC paints and finishes and carpet tile. There’s also an ecoroof, high performance windows and if you sign up today, 2 months of free rent and a half hour consultation with an interior designer. Now if it only came with an automated dinner maker. I’d so be there.
Barton Fink anyone?

Thank you! You often write very interesting articles. You improved my mood.
Very cool building! I like the way they look and I love anything that is LEED platinum. Portland has more buildings like this than any other city, but this is one of the first large apartment buildings.
