Flying Cloud

I’ve been known to have a thing for Airstreams. I even owned one once, although that ended in tearful moment in my driveway as I was told that the frame was rusted out and that basically I bought a hunk of junk. Now many years later I can share in other people’s joy of Airstreams, without the tug of wanting to own one. So I was delighted today to tour a recently renovated “Flying Cloud” and meet Kate (and her husband “John in the plaid shirt” who I didn’t get to speak with).

Kate and John were in Portland to kick start their “Eco-Discovery Tour” and showcase their trailer renovation that uses healthy, green materials. They parked in front of Eclectic Home on NW Raleigh and 22nd and welcomed a steady stream of intentional visitors and curious passersby. Once I got over contorting my reflection in its shiny exterior, I made my way inside and was immediately struck by how beautiful the renovation was and what I didn‘t experience. There wasn’t even a hint of toxic odor that usually accompanies new and renovated trailers that use every chemical to ensure longevity of the materials, but not necessarily the occupants.

The cabinet work was made from kirei and bamboo, the floor was cork, the countertop – natural linoleum and the bedding – wool. A comically named “Nature’s Head” composting toilet anchors the full service bathroom that also included a sink and shower/tub. Kate explained the features of the remodel and remarked (without me instigating it) how lucky they were to have found a trailer whose frame was solid and without rust. How right she is.

Kate and John plan to travel the states, touring green material suppliers and sites around the country. The solar power, composting toilet and low flow water system will allow them to boondock when needed. Kate mentioned that they may be gone “indefinitely” even though her husband imagines they’ll be out for a year. They plan to keep us all posted via a blog and once I get the address, I’ll add it to the post. For now, here are some photos to get you dreaming:

I think it was a local cabinet maker in Bend, Oregon. I’ll ask the owner and let you know the company’s name.

The beautiful cabinetry was done by Larry Hein of Hein’s Wood Werks in Bend. He can be reached at 541-420-4282 or visit his website at http://www.heinswoodwerks.com/
