In my previous post, I didn’t admit to the full nature of my obsession with small structures. I realize now that I was hiding something from you, and for that I apologize. So here goes the truth…
Hi, my name is Alisa, and I am building a shed. Phew. I feel a lot better now. It’s not that I am ashamed. It’s just that the shed project feels big, even though it’s going to be small. It’s dimensions are a whopping 8 feet by 6 feet. It may also end up with a porch, but I haven’t gotten that far yet. To date, Co-pilot and I have excavated the site by moving a lot of plants and dirt to other parts of the garden, spread out the crushed recycled concrete gravel, leveled the skids and nailed together the 2×6 frame for the foundation. All in all, it’s been a few weekend days worth of work.
Why so shy about building a shed? Well, I’ve put a lot of my hopes into the shed. For one, since I won’t be giving up the big house anytime soon, the shed is a way for me to entertain my interest in small living. It will be the place where I can go read, write and think without all the enticing distractions of our home. I also imagine it will be a fun place for the kid to stage plays, make fort and hatch schemes. Perhaps it will even the space from which I write my first book. Yes, it’s a shed full of dreams.
The shed also gets me building and playing with tools again, something I haven’t done with any frequency since I started a desk job. Today, after cutting the lumber down to length and nailing the foundation’s frame into place, I can feel the muscles in my arm stiffening in slight protest. That and the driving rain shut down the jobsite for the remainder of the day. I promise you shed, I’ll be back next weekend.
In the meantime, here’s a musical suggestion to go along with this post. Spin up Nick Drake’s song, “Man in a Shed,” take a load off and enjoy the rain.
Man in a Shed, by Nick Drake
Well there was a man who lived in a shed
Spent most of his days out of his head
For his shed was rotten let in the rain
Said it was enough to drive any man insane
When it rained
He felt so bad
When it snowed he felt just simply sad.
Well there was a girl who lived nearby
Whenever he saw her he could only simply sigh
But she lived in a house so very big and grand
For him it seemed like some very distant land
So when he called her
His shed to mend,
She said I’m sorry you’ll just have to find a friend.
Well this story is not so very new
But the man is me, yes and the girl is you
So leave your house come into my shed
Please stop my world from raining through my head
Please don’t think
I’m not your sort
You’ll find that sheds are nicer than you thought.

Will do!
I think it is great that you are building a shed. My DH has built two garden sheds and now we are creating some plans for a chicken coop. Have fun with it!
